Twitter is getting rid of the egg avatar (because that will totally fix the abuse problem)
As the first sentence of this article states, Twitter has an abuse problem. Honestly, the Internet has an abuse problem, but Twitter does tend to attract a lot of abusers.
How are they addressing this on-going problem? Twitter plans to replace the default user avatar, the “egg”, with a more Facebook-like silhouette. This move is specifically because the egg avatar has become so deeply associated with accounts that spam and abuse.
They seem to have missed the bigger picture in this situation. If they fail to get to the root of the problem, the silhouette will be soon be associated with spam and abuse, just as the egg is now.
The lesson here: Don’t miss the bigger picture.
