The FEC and Facebook
The FEC has been looking for answers as details have become more clear surrounding the case of Russians meddling in the 2016 presidential election via Facebook Advertising.
For quite some time digital advertising platforms such as Facebook had fought for exceptions from the FEC pertaining to the standard advertising disclosure rules associated with the political process. Due to the creative nature of digital advertising Facebook and others sought to provide flexibility to its advertisers through these exceptions.
Among other things (lack of oversight and review to name a couple), these exceptions created an advertising canvas that allowed public or private entities to paint figurative pictures of candidates without claiming on whose behalf they were being displayed.
Facebook and the FEC both agree that more strict regulations should be in place to provide appropriate details to the general public being served these advertisements.
Garland here! Most have come to know me as Gar but in honor of my namesake, my grandfather I have grown to appreciate the unique name I have. Speaking of weird names, it’s actually how my wife Tasia and I met…something like “Hey nice to meet you. I know what it’s like to have a weird name too!” We’ve been together ever since and happily married for 2 years. We have 2 dalmatians Rio and Sochi and love spending time with our family here in Grand Rapids where we both grew up. We spend many weekends on Lake St. Clair where Tasia’s family currently resides. I love all things sports and am especially passionate about golf and the Michigan State Spartans!
