The Fight for Social [Media] Streaming is Real
In recent news, Facebook has secured LIVE streaming rights to every Friday night MLB game for the rest of the season. It was not cheap – in fact the typical going rate for professional games is in the neighborhood of $5 million per game! The real news behind this recent revelation is that streaming LIVE via social media, telecommunications, and tech companies is exploding both in popularity and competitiveness. I expect LIVE streaming via social media & communications companies will continue to increase until full saturation. It breaks down to a few major reasons for consumers & opportunities for the platforms.
For consumers, LIVE streaming via Facebook/Twitter/Amazon/Verizon/etc. opens the door to watching the game on the device(s) they are already using. The game can be viewed anywhere one has internet connection via WiFi OR 3G/4G data. It also means the consumer does not have to pay for a premium subscription to watch the games and further supports the shift away from TV providers to mobile & internet providers.
For the platforms, LIVE streaming via Facebook/Twitter/Amazon/Verizon/etc. further engages the respective platform’s user base and creates an incentive for new users to subscribe or sign up. Further, it allows the platforms to sell the by-product of a huge engaged user pool – ADVERTISING REVENUE.
