“We are a brand new company and we don’t have name recognition yet, so I don’t understand why I can’t just do whatever I want.”

That’s what my business partner once said to me the day after we had chosen a “Doing Business As” name and I’d filed the paperwork with the state. I was completely appalled by the statement, but the reality of the situation is that most new business owners think just like he was thinking. We are new, we don’t have name recognition until we are more solidified in the industry, etc. I’ve heard it all.

The truth, though, is that a brand new company with a brand new name is in the optimal place for branding – there are no past mistakes clouding their image. It’s a fresh slate, and a chance to build the name recognition you want from the start.

Eventually, I was able to get him to see it my way – we had a blank canvas in front of us and the perfect opportunity to create the brand image we wanted instead of fighting back against mistakes and confusion.
